A Pigeon tower ( Dovecotes ) is a tall, cylindrical mansion built on farmland. These towers were the nesting places of many pigeons. Pigeon towers have been used to collect their waste and use it as fertilizer on farms.
In Iran, pigeon towers were common in the central regions, especially in the villages around Isfahan. Especially during the Safavid rule, the Iranians built many towers for pigeons. It is said that at one time there were about three thousand of these historic towers around Isfahan.
The design inside these towers consists of an infinite number of nest-like holes on the walls inside the tower. The dimensions of each hole are about 20 by 20 by 28 cm.
On the outskirts of Valashan village in Darcheh area near Isfahan, about ten of these pigeon towers can be seen en masse.
